Learning By Style

If I were a high school teacher, I would want to use the clothing, hair and jewelry styles of my students as creative learning tools.

The young man with the Mohawk would be given an assignment; to investigate the origin of his haircut and to give a talk and demonstration on its rich and colorful history. The students could conduct a fashion show of types of clothing that have prompted dress-code furor in the past. The boy with the earring would be asked to find out all he could about the significance of man's adornment of the earlobe with a single gold ring or stud. He might even give a lecture on various ear-piercing techniques along with a description of his own experience with the operation.

What a source of valuable material! I wouldn't hesitate to use it in my classroom.
