Faced with mobile home residents worried about losing their homes, the Hawthorne City Council passed an ordinance to regulate sales of mobile home parks in a preliminary 3-0 vote. The measure would require park owners to file a "mobile home relocation impact report" before seeking approval to convert the land to another use.
The proposed ordinance says the council may require an owner to alleviate the suffering of ousted tenants by paying moving costs, postponing the conversion, buying the residents' mobile homes or paying two months' rent plus security deposits of those moving to apartments.
At the Monday council meeting, residents of the Amberlight Mobile Home Park, 14131 Cordary Ave., said that a possible sale of their park would cause great hardship. A final vote on the ordinance is scheduled for Aug. 12.
