Mandatory Use of Seat Belts

July 27, 1985

"No mandatory seat-belt law for California! The proposal is another example of 'Big Brother government knows best for you,' " says Winston Besocke. Besocke is wrong.

Unfortunately, proponents of that law have failed to explain that use of seat belts is not only for the safety of the drivers who wear them but, by keeping a driver in his seat should he be in an accident, it often enables him to avoid losing control of his car, which might otherwise run wild with resulting injury or death to the occupants of other cars, one of which might even be Besocke's.

Mandatory use of seat belts is no more "Big Brother government knows best for you" than are traffic signals, which I have never known anyone to claim are better suited for a totalitarian state than for those who live in California.
