Bulgarian middleweight Alexander Varbanov set a jerk world record of 465 pounds and won two world titles at the World Weightlifting Championships at Sodertalje, Sweden.

Varbanov, 21, beat countryman Zdrawko Stoichkov's world mark set in 1984 by three pounds. Varbanov officially won the jerk event on 463 pounds since only 5 1/2-pound improvements are counted. He reached a total weight of 815 pounds to clinch the combined division.

Romania's Ondrei Socaci upset Varbanov in the snatch division on lightest body weight when four lifters finished on 353 pounds.
