Department of Fish and Game biologists report a three-day aerial survey of Owens Valley tule elk indicates that the population is holding its own with 600 animals counted. Last year, a record 609 were counted. The DFG estimates 490 is the optimum population for the valley and plans to transplant about 200 tule elk to other parts of the state in October.
