Protests Over Jordan Transfers

September 15, 1985

I find it very difficult to agree with the stand of the South Gate parents in their dispute with the Los Angeles Board of Education over transferring students to Jordan High School.

For 30 years we have had exactly the same situation in our section of Downey.

We are not allowed to send our children to any Downey school, but must send them to other school districts.

Yet our residents, both Latino and Anglo, have accepted this situation without any protest, realizing that circumstances dictate this school assignment.

South Gate parents should set aside their blatantly racist stand and make an honest attempt to cooperate with the school district in solving an overcrowding problem that they personally created by overpopulating an area that, for decades, had sufficient classroom space for all the children in the district.
