The House ethics committee was asked to determine if House rules were violated by the financial dealings of Rep. Fernand J. St Germain (D-R. I.) or by Virginia Democratic Rep. Dan Daniel's accepting free travel on a defense contractor's airplane. The request by Common Cause, the citizens lobby, followed a Wall Street Journal report that St Germain had "received lots of investment help from people and institutions that have benefited from his official actions." The Common Cause action also followed a report by the Richmond (Va.) News Leader that Daniel "occasionally flies between his district and Washington on aircraft of a defense contractor (Beech Aircraft Corp.)."
