PORTLAND — If the defending Western Football Conference champion Portland State Vikings gag at the mere mention of potatoes, please forgive them.

Last season they were walloped by Idaho, 49-14, in a non-conference game, and Saturday the other Famous Potato institution, Idaho State, handed the Vikings a 23-10 defeat in another non-conference game.

The Bengals pounded Portland on the ground. They piled up 293 rushing yards to only 114 for Portland State, wearing the Vikings down and scoring 13 points in the final quarter.

Portland State fell to 1-1. Idaho State is 2-0.

In other non-conference games involving WFC teams, quarterback Greg Calcagno completed 20 of 26 passes for 311 yards and two TDs to lead Santa Clara (1-0) to a 44-18 rout of Chico State (0-2), and Cal Poly SLO beat North Dakota State, 35-29, as Jim Gleed and Joey Kolina scored two TDs each.
