Santa Fe Springs

September 19, 1985

The City Council has voted unanimously to pay the $2,805 debt of the defunct Santa Fe Springs Community Theater, which performed its last show Aug. 3.

Mayor Al Sharp appealed to the council to pay the debt because, he said, the theater group's former producer, Tom Hut, was personally liable for the debt left over from two of three productions staged this year. The 5-year-old theater company broke even with this year's first production, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," but lost money on productions of "Damn Yankees" and "West Side Story" because of low attendance.

Hut said Monday that the theater group owed the money to contract workers who had been paid only 66% of their wages.

The city had already given the group $5,000 in cash and $5,000 in services this year.
