Furor Over Farrakhan

September 22, 1985

I am native to Los Angeles, black and nearly 50 years of age. I have observed the media create the monster Farrakhan. He does not speak for me, nor does he speak for anyone I know. Mayor Bradley should have given him all the attention he deserves--none. I am sorry the mayor felt the need to make any comment.

Were it not for the press, most thinking persons would not have known that Farrakhan was in town. If the press stopped giving him so much free publicity, Jews and blacks alike could go about their daily lives undaunted and Farrakhan could rake his muck and venom without an audience. Remember if a tree falls in a forest and there is no one (press) there, it probably doesn't make a sound.
