Bobby Rahal of Dublin, Ohio, held off Rick Mears of Bakersfield to win the Detroit News 200-mile Indy-car race by .71 of a second at the Michigan International Speedway at Brooklyn, Mich.

Rahal completed the 100-lap race in 1 hour 13 minutes 19 seconds at an average speed of 163.647 m.p.h.. It was his second victory in the last three races on the CART circuit.
