September 25, 1985

The driver of a pickup truck that killed three Santee residents after running a stop sign was sentenced Tuesday to one year in jail plus restitution to the survivors.

Joseph John Murphy, 24, of San Diego, was also placed on five years' probation by San Diego Superior Court Judge Richard Huffman, who fined him $300. The restitution amount will be determined later.

Murphy was driving his brother's truck and was not insured when he ran a stop sign March 23 at Buckman Springs Road and collided with a car on Old Highway 80 in East County.

Killed were Linda Perillo, 40, a social worker; Tammy Sue Kiefer, 18, and Chris Onweller, 13, all of Santee. Five others were injured.

Murphy pleaded guilty Aug. 22 to three counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
