OCEANSIDE — Scott Crump and Dan Smith, both surfing in their hometown, topped the list of qualifiers after the first day of competition in the Stubbies Pro International Tournament Tuesday at Oceanside Harbor.
Twenty-eight of the 56 qualifying heats were completed Tuesday leading up to the tournament's main event, which starts Thursday.
Among the 10 other San Diegans who stayed alive were Paul Barr of Carlsbad, Todd Martin of Encinitas and Danny Connor of San Diego.
Once the main event gets under way, the tournament will feature some of the world's top surfers including 1984 world champion Tom Carroll, defending champion Shaun Tomson, four-time world champion Mark Richards and Oceanside's Mike Lambresi.
In the women's division, 1984 world champion Freda Zamba will defend her 1984 Stubbies championship.
