Councilman Marc Wilder has announced he will not seek reelection in April to his 1st District seat, citing a need to more closely attend to business and family responsibilities.
Wilder, 36, has been a member of the Long Beach council since 1978, but had privately confided to political associates months ago that he might not run again.
The two-term councilman announced his decision at an evening council meeting Tuesday.
Wilder said his council duties had been a drain on his private life and income. His most recent economic disclosure statement, filed in March, listed Wilder's annual income as his $12,000 council salary and less than $10,000 from an arts consulting firm he runs with his wife.
Wilder ran for the 58th Assembly District last year, but incumbent Republican Dennis Brown defeated him by a 2-to-1 margin.
