Rio Mesa recovered its own squib kick on the opening kickoff at the San Marcos 48-yard line and Leonard Lee capped the drive with a three-yard run. . . . Rio Mesa quarterback Steve Carolan passed 22 yards to John Northcutt at the San Marcos nine, setting up a nine-yard scoring pass to Darren Romano with 9:34 left in the second quarter that gave Rio Mesa a 14-7 lead. . . . Northcutt intercepted a Paul Gamberdella pass and went 75 yards for the score with 3:54 left in the half, making it 28-7. . . . Romano returned a punt 44 yards to the San Marcos three. KEY PLAYERS

Paul Gamberdella (SM) completed 16 of 37 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown. Steve Carolan (RM) completed seven of 11 for 63 yards and one touchdown. Leonard Lee (RM) rushed 19 times for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Manuel Sanchez (RM) carried eight times for 30 yards and two touchdowns. John Northcutt and Bryan Hill had interceptions for Rio Mesa.
