Hawkins Gets 28 Years in Slaying

James Hawkins Jr., whose family's stand against a Watts street gang drew national attention, was sentenced today to 28 years in state prison for killing a reputed member of the gang in 1983.

Superior Court Judge Ronald S. W. Lew passed sentence on Hawkins, 41, who was convicted in August of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Anttwon Thomas, 19, in front of the Hawkins family's store-arcade.
