OTTAWA — The number of poor people in Canada increased last year for the fourth consecutive year, and more than one of every six Canadians now live below the poverty line, the National Council of Welfare said.
Preliminary figures collected by Statistics Canada showed more than 4.3 million people were below the poverty line in 1984, up from the nearly 3.5 million living in poverty in 1980 and 1981, 3.9 million in 1982 and 4.2 million in 1983.
