Jerry Hulse's Travel Tips

November 17, 1985|JERRY HULSE | Times Travel Editor

If you're traveling to Colorado, write for a copy of the "Denver & Colorado Guide" c/o the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau, Box 101, Denver, Colo. 80202. Lists hotels, motels, B&Bs in the Denver area. Other details on restaurants, sightseeing. One section is devoted to day trips from Denver. You'll also find ski information on Aspen, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Crested Butte, Keystone Resort, Snowmass, Steamboat Springs, Telluride, Vail, Winter Park (background on lifts, tours, accommodations). This is a slick, 76-page full-color magazine. And it's free for the asking.

Rome

Or if Rome is on your horizon, try for a copy of "A Guide to Rome." Published by American Madeline Grimoldi who has lived 17 years in the Eternal City, searching out little-known hideaways and keeping updated on the well-known landmarks. Grimoldi's guide contains information on restaurants, shopping, concerts, museums, galleries, sightseeing. She's included an English-Italian vocabulary. Maps of Rome with bus routes, metro stations. The 74-page magazine sells for about two bucks at newsstands in Rome. You can also write for a copy although postage jumps the price to $3.50. But I don't recommend sending checks through the mail (and never, never cash). Grimoldi's address: Via Sicilia 24, 00187 Rome, Italy. (My advice: Buy a copy after you arrive in Rome).

Singles

Partners-in-Travel, the club that encourages singles to travel together, is busy with a new service that enables singles to do trips at discounts amounting to as much as 50% (tours, flights, cruises, charters). Designed for the single traveler who is prepared to push off on short notice and willing to share hotel rooms, cabins aboard ships. According to Partners-in-Travel these are trips with confirmed reservations. No standbys. Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Partners-in-Travel, P.O. Box 491145, Los Angeles 90049. Ask for information on "Quick Getaways."

Holidays the Inn Way

Several California inns are scheduling special activities for the holidays. Everything from candlelight tours to caroling, costume parties, a Victorian Christmas dinner. Holiday decorations set the mood. Trees, holly, stuffed stockings. All the magic of Christmas. Begins with Thanksgiving and runs through New Year's Day. For a copy of the guide with all the details, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Going Home for the Holidays, c/o the Yellow Brick Road, 2445 Northcreek Lane, Fullerton 92631.

Holland Discounts

For $15 you can obtain a Holland Culture Card. Provides information on more than 250 museums, tourist sites in Holland. Private galleries, artist studios, etc. An extra $7.50 gets you the new Holland Leisure Card. Good for discounts on domestic flights, car rentals, sightseeing excursions. Student Exchange

Students ages 12 to 22 are being offered a three-week trip to Europe next summer for $995. Includes room and board with a European family and the round-trip flight. In return, the U.S. student is required to host a European student in the United States for three weeks. The program is designed by Penfriend International Travel Exchange, 1901 Avenue of the Stars, Suite 1774, Los Angeles 90067. Penfriend matches the U.S. student with a European student of the same age, interests. Penfriend describes its offer as "unbeatable."

Freighters

It costs $22 to keep current with sailing dates, ports of call, prices of passenger-carrying cargo liners. This is the annual subscription rate for the "Freighter Space Advisory." Published every two weeks in Pasadena. Contains news of special discounts, booking information. A recent issue tells about a 16-day trip from Tahiti to 10 villages in the Marquesas Islands, visits to the Tuamotu atolls. This ship carries 12 passengers. Prices from $1,680. No age limit.
