Jerry Hulse's Travel Tips

November 24, 1985|JERRY HULSE | Times Travel Editor

Because of an unusually large number of reader recommendations, I'm turning the tips column over to them today.

Oregon--Ray and Gloria Kahn, Culver City: Enjoyed Spindrift B&B, 2990 Beach Loop Road, Bandon, Ore. 97411. "On a bluff above a gorgeous beach. Rates $40/$45 double."

Mariposa, Calif.--Marilynn McBlaine, Arcadia: Meadow Creek Ranch, 2669 Triangle Road and Highway 49, Mariposa, Calif. 95338. "This charming home was originally an old stagecoach stop dating back to the late 1800s and is now restored as a bed-and-breakfast inn. A wonderful spot to begin a trip through the Gold Country or into Yosemite Valley. The most delicious and substantial breakfasts we ever had in an American B&B."

Death Valley, Calif.--J. N. Corning, Westchester: "A great three-day getaway to Death Valley. Trip includes motor coach, two nights at Furnace Creek Ranch, a full-day tour of the valley, including Scotty's Castle. Cost is $145 per person, double occupancy. The tour operator, California Discovery Tours, P.O. Box 1677, San Juan Capistrano, Calif. "

Santa Barbara--William J. Thompson, Los Angeles: Praises Simpson House Inn, 121 E. Arrellaga St., Santa Barbara 93101. "Within a half block of the Alice Keck Park. Visitors will marvel at the meticulous manner in which the grounds have been patiently and lovingly manicured to a fare-thee-well. In scant minutes after our arrival a large tray bearing at least three different cheeses, crackers, large bunches of grapes plus an ample carafe of white wine delivered to our room. Rates, $55/$100 per night."

Austria--Bob and Brenda Brans, Palm Springs: "We were treated more like friends than house guests at Pension Clara, Salzburger Str. 6a, Wattens, Tirol, Austria. Summer rates under $30 for two with breakfast, winter rates just slightly higher. Near Innsbruck. Pleasant and so much charm."

Austria--Glens Dowerer, Beverly Hills: "Hotel Wenghof, 5453 Werfenweng, Salzburg, Austria. Indoor and open-air swimming pools. Guest rooms luxurious. Rates $15/$20 summer, $25/$40 winter, including breakfast and dinner."

Britain--Dennis and Margaret Hughes, Whittier: "A lovely B&B, the Raisdale on Raisdale Road, Penarth, South Glamorgan, Wales CF6 2BL. "A lovely old stately home. Rates, 29 per night per couple."

England--Jackie Pickell, San Diego: Grasmead House Hotel, 1 Scarcroft Hill, York YO2 1D, England. Rate, $47.

England--Barbara Joan Witt, Lancaster: "If you are planning a visit to London in the near future, Tustin Holiday Flats is a great value. Complete in every detail: TV, towels, bedding, dishes, etc. Our one-bedroom apartment ran about $200 per week. Located in a nice part of London, near the Baker Street tube. For a brochure, write to Charles Tustin Ltd., 94 York St., London W1."

England--Mary Burnett, Tustin: "A wonderful canal boat trip from Stratford-on-Avon. Saw many scenic spots on our four-day outing to Tewkesbury and back with VIP Avon Cruises, 21 Eton Road, Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire CV37 7EJ, England."

England--Al and Henrietta Weber, Rancho Palos Verdes: "We would like to recommend the Coach House, a B&B, Stoberry Park, Wells, Somerset BA5 3AA, England. Rate 12 per person."

Jamaica--Judy Morris, Inglewood: "Rented a villa in Jamaica with a full staff (cook/maid, houseman/guide, groundskeeper). A 12-passenger bus (for an extra cost) took us from one end of the island to the other. A swimming pool with a 180-degree view of the beautiful blue Caribbean Sea. The list goes on. This was in the exclusive Ironshore area of Montego Bay. Price for one week, including air fare and villa stay, was $749 per person. Will return again. For information write to J. P. Ryan c/o Deja Vu Villa Rentals, P.O. Box 642, Harbor City, Calif. 90710. Telephone (213) 971-1415."

France--Dr. and Mrs. H. Rosenberg, Hollywood: "A wonderful family-type restaurant, L'Univers, 73 Rue d'Alesia, 75014 Paris."

France--Bob Steinke, San Diego: Recommends the book, "Castle Hotels of Europe." ("I rarely stay in modern hotels, but choose inexpensive chateaus, medieval inns, castles and 17th- and 18th-Century converted hotels.") The book is published by Robert P. Long, 445 Glen Court, Cutchogue, N.Y. 11935.

Ireland--Marjorie C. Tucker, Los Angeles: Enjoyed the Ariel House B&B, 52 Lansdowne Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin, Ireland. "Reception room is filled with museum-quality antiques. Single and double rooms with private baths and full Irish breakfast cost 20 per person. Only steps from bus and trains. Quiet area. Centrally heated rooms, color TV, hair dryers."

New Zealand--June Ann Matheson: "A really nice stay with Rachel and Paul Risk at Mataura Valley Station, Box 29, Garston, Southland, New Zealand, for $32 single (bed and breakfast). Lovely custom-built home on a high country sheep station 45 minutes south of Queenstown. Made me feel very much at home. Also suggest California guest house ($18 single) at 29 Collingswood, Nelson, New Zealand. Run by Carol Glen. Her Finnish pancake breakfast is a must."
