Women's Basketball Roundup : USC Women Win Easily in Tuneup for No. 1 Texas

USC's women's basketball team tuned up for its game next Tuesday against No. 1-ranked Texas at Austin, Tex., by defeating Cal Poly Pomona, 88-56, Saturday night before 1,607 fans at Cal Poly Pomona, a record crowd for a women's basketball game at the school.

Cheryl Miller scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Trojans (6-0). Miller made 9 of 14 field-goal attempts. Cynthia Cooper, hitting 8 of 17 shots from the floor and 5 of 5 from the foul line, was USC's leading scorer with 21 points. Cheri Nelson added 15 and Karon Howell 13.

Vickie Mitchell scored 16 points and had 15 rebounds to lead the Broncos (5-2).

Cal State Long Beach 85, Indiana 61--Forward Carol Brandt had 15 points and 7 rebounds to lead the 49ers in the championship game of the tournament at Cal Long State Long Beach.

Missy Rand and Shaundra McMichael added 14 points apiece for the 49ers, who led by 11 at halftime. The Hoosiers closed to within six points at 59-53 with 8:37 left in the game, but Long Beach (4-0) went on a 12-4 run to put the game out of reach.

Indiana, which dropped to 3-2, was led by Cindy Bumgarner with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

UCLA 78, UC Santa Barbara 51--Four Bruin players scored in double figures as UCLA ran away with an easy nonconference victory at UC Santa Barbara.

Shari Biggs led UCLA with 15 points, while Anne Dean had 14 and Dora Dome had 13. Freshman Althea Ford scored 10 points for the Bruins.

UCLA evened its record at 3-3, while UC Santa Barbara fell to 2-3. Kristen Nicholson and Kira Anthoffer led the Gauchos with 12 points apiece.
