Lebanon's main Christian militia freed some Syrian prisoners in a move heralding renewed efforts for peace in Lebanon. A spokesman for the militia, called the Lebanese Forces, said the prisoners, who were captured earlier in the 10-year civil war, were handed over to Syrian officers near Syrian army lines in mountains eight miles from Beirut. The spokesman declined to say how many were freed. News reports said Syria would respond by freeing Christian captives soon.
