Area College Basketball : Records Assist Orange Coast Win

Orange Coast College guard Jon Johnston had a school-record 17 assists Thursday night, and the Pirates upset San Diego Mesa Tournament favorite Grossmont, 98-80, in San Diego. The Pirates also set a team record for assists with 36, bettering the mark of 33.

Orange Coast (6-5) trailed by as many as 13 in the first half and the game was tied, 68-68, before the Pirates outscored the Griffins (12-4) 20-4 over a five-minute span. Center Joe Seager scored 23 points, was 11 of 12 from the field and pulled down 8 rebounds. Teammate Fred Bickett also scored 23. Scott Clements was the leading scorer with 26.

Rancho Santiago 98, San Bernardino 91--The Dons (11-2) won the first-round game of the Rancho Santiago College Holiday tournament but found the Indians a more difficult opponent than their 2-11 record might indicate. Leading the Dons were forward Mark Moses (31 points), Howard Cole (25 points and 7 rebounds) and Simon Thomas (17 points and 6 assists). The Indians' Nate Macon led all scorers with 36 points. The Dons play Los Angeles Trade Tech (6-6) in the second round at 8 tonight.

Fullerton 85, Hancock 75--The Hornets (6-5) got balanced scoring against the Bulldogs (6-6) as Stevie Snow had 17 points, Rocco Meyers had 15 and Jim Mansfield had 14. The Bulldogs' Sherman Vernon was the game's top scorer with 24 points. The Hornets play Santa Monica in the second round at 6 tonight.
