The World : Iran May Quit Kharg Depot

December 30, 1985

Iraq announced another air strike against Iran's Kharg Island oil terminal, and shipping sources said the Tehran government plans to abandon the battered island as its main oil export station in favor of two new offshore centers. An Iraqi military spokesman said warplanes bombed oil installations on the island and set various targets ablaze. The shipping sources said that Iran, fearing continued Iraqi air strikes, also plans to shuttle chartered tankers through an Iraqi-imposed war zone in the northern Persian Gulf to the port of Jask, outside the gulf entrance. At Jask, the oil would be stored or transferred to seagoing tankers.
