The World

December 30, 1985

World chess champion Gary Kasparov will forfeit his title if he refuses to grant a rematch to Anatoly Karpov, the man he defeated for the crown, said Lim Kok Ann, secretary general of the International Chess Federation. The official responded to comments last week in which the Soviet grandmaster called the idea of a rematch "nonsense" and criticized federation rules that require him to meet Karpov again by Feb. 10. Meantime, Karpov said he understands that the rematch will be delayed until 1987 because of a busy chess schedule in 1986.
