The City Council has decided to increase the number of permits to sell fireworks this year from six to eight and authorized the city manager to hold a lottery to distribute those permits among the 16 organizations that have applied for them.
But the council, concerned that some Santa Fe Springs-based organizations could lose to outside groups in a lottery, is considering changing the permit eligibility rules for 1987. One of the changes being considered is to require that 25% of an organization's members be city residents before it can apply for a permit, said Cathy Goin, administrative assistant.
The council ordered a staff report on eligibility options. The report is due in mid-February. The city's fireworks ordinance states that, to be eligible for a sales permit, groups must be nonprofit and have their principal work area in Santa Fe Springs.
