Kilauea Ends Latest Eruption

January 02, 1986|United Press International

VOLCANO, Hawaii — Kilauea Volcano ended the spectacular 40th phase of its long-running eruption early today after shooting fountains of fire 800 feet high and sending a lava flow into a housing area but causing no damage.

The 25-hour eruption ended at 2:40 a.m. with some tense moments as a tiny rivulet of lava crossed into the Royal Gardens Subdivision. But the lava moved over the hardened remains of older flows and caused no damage.
