NORFOLK, Va. — A Soviet intelligence ship eavesdropping on military communications from a surveillance point near Chesapeake Bay appears to be on a routine spying mission, Navy officials said Wednesday.

The 3,400-ton auxiliary general intelligence ship has been monitoring military traffic from its position seven miles off the Virginia Beach coast since Dec. 19, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
