Jerry Berndt, who led Pennsylvania to four consecutive Ivy League titles, Wednesday was named football coach and athletic director at Rice.
Berndt, who resigned at Penn Tuesday, signed a five-year contract with the Southwest Conference university. He replaced Watson Brown, who resigned Dec. 5.
Berndt's salary is believed to be about $150,000 annually.
Berndt, 47, ended five years at Penn with a 29-18-2 record. He followed a 1-9 season in 1981 with four consecutive Ivy League championships. The Quakers were 7-2-1 this season.
