DENVER — Colorado Sen. Gary Hart, currently the front-runner for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination, was scheduled to end months of speculation today by announcing whether he will seek reelection to the Senate.
There was widespread speculation that Hart would not risk his presidential bid by seeking a third term.
A decision by Hart not to run would damage Democratic dreams of recapturing control of the Senate this year. Polls show that while Hart could win reelection, Rep. Timothy E. Wirth, the Democrat likely to get the nomination if Hart does not run, would lose. But Democratic leaders insist that Wirth would be as strong a candidate as Hart.
