Excellent Good Fair Poor : COMPACT DISCS

January 07, 1986|Robert Hilburn

"River Deep, Mountain High," Ike and Tina Turner. A&M. Out to top the emotional sweep of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' " (his landmark 1964 hit with the Righteous Brothers), record producer extraordinaire Phil Spector came up in 1966 with the title track, a dazzling exercise in romantic innocence and longing that remains one of the most powerful singles in contemporary pop. The main interest now in this German import is in noting the difference between the selections on the LP that Spector obviously cared about and those that bear little evidence of his wall-of-sound production technique.
