South Yemen Leader Hurt, Executive Says

January 14, 1986|Associated Press

MANAMA, Bahrain — Persian Gulf sources said today that President Ali Nasser Hasani of Marxist South Yemen was critically injured in a coup attempt. In London, the Foreign Office and Western diplomatic sources said heavy fighting kept up for a second day today in South Yemen, a key Soviet ally in the Mideast.

A gulf shipping executive, who spoke on condition he not be identified, told the Associated Press, "We have information received by wireless from the port of Aden about (the) president . . . being hospitalized for serious injuries he suffered in the assassination attempt." London sources said they could not confirm this report. The sources expressed doubt about reports that four plotters were executed.
