Smuggler of Aliens Draws Year in Prison

January 15, 1986

A San Dimas man has been sentenced in a Los Angeles federal court to one year and a day in prison for smuggling Polish citizens into the United States.

U.S. District Judge Harry Hupp imposed the sentence Monday against Walter Zlotnicki, a naturalized U.S. citizen who pleaded guilty to the smuggling charges.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Zlotnicki schemed to smuggle about a dozen Poles into the United States via Mexico and other countries and that he received a portion of the aliens' paychecks.

The defendant's wife, Maria Margaret Zlotnicki, a resident alien from Poland, was sentenced late last year to 300 hours of community service for her role in the illicit activity.
