Rabbis Bar Temple Mount Visits

January 20, 1986|From Reuters

JERUSALEM — Israel's Rabbinic Council issued an order today forbidding anyone from entering Jerusalem's Temple Mount, site of Arab-Israeli tensions, "until the arrival of the Messiah."

The order, aimed at restoring peace on the site holy to both Jews and Muslims, effectively bans only religious Jews since the ruling lacks the force of secular law. Ultra-nationalist members of Israel's Parliament sparked Muslim riots twice this month when they attempted inspection tours aimed at underlining Israeli sovereignty.
