Excellent Good Fair Poor : VIDEOCASSETTES

January 21, 1986|RICHARD CROMELIN | Compiled by Terry Atkinson

"Ten From 'Your Show of Shows.' " Media. $59.95. Sid Caesar's 1950-54 program is the one that usually comes up first when people talk about the Golden Age of Television. This 92-minute compilation (released theatrically in 1973 and now cropping up on cable) will remove some of the luster. The skits contain a lot of broad mugging and vaudeville-like shtick, but little wit and invention in the writing (by Mel Brooks, among others). It's not close to Kovacs. The highlight is a long spoof of "From Here to Eternity," with a waterlogged beach scene that yields the only crack-up-the-cast ad lib. 1/2
