A European group will build a Napa winery.

January 23, 1986

A 1,100-acre site was bought in Napa's Foss Valley area by a joint venture of Whitbread in North America, Marchesi L&P Antinori of Florence, Italy, and Champagne J. Bollinger of Ay, of France. John W. Andersen of Whitbread, which is based in Great Britain, said $30 million will be spent in developing vineyards and a winery to produce premium red and white wines, with the first vintage to be released by the end of the decade. A Whitbread subsidiary, Julius Wile Sons & Co. will market the new wine as it already does for both Antinori wines and Bollinger champagne.
