The Region

January 23, 1986

"We must do something to control this border," said regional Immigration and Naturalization Service Commissioner Harold Ezell in San Ysdiro after an unusally busy and violent weekend during which three men, all apparently Mexican citizens, were killed in separate incidents. Ezell noted that 3,294 suspected illegals--a single-day record--were arrested on Sunday. Ezell criticized Mexican authorities for not doing more to stem the flow and called again on Congress to penalize U.S. employers who hire illegals.
