TUNIS, Tunisia — Police have taken control of the headquarters of the biggest trade union in this North African country and handed it over to a faction opposed to the existing union leadership, union officials said Wednesday.

Police entered the headquarters of the 350,000-strong General Union of Tunisian Workers, whose long-running crisis with the government appears to have again come to a head, on Monday night. The premises were handed over Tuesday.

It was the second time in three months that the union leadership was forced out of its headquarters.
