Ex-Liberia Official Charged With Treason

January 25, 1986|From Reuters

MONROVIA, Liberia — Jackson Doe, a former Liberian education minister and a presidential candidate in last October's general elections, has been charged with treason, his lawyer said Friday.

Jackson Doe, who is no relation to President Samuel K. Doe, was charged in connection with a bloody coup attempt last Nov. 12.

He is the second senior official of the Liberia Action Party, the main opposition grouping, to be charged following the coup attempt, in which hundreds of people died. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, a senator-elect for the party and an internationally known economist and banker, was charged earlier this week.
