Irma Jean Brown, a judicial commissioner for the Compton district since 1982, has been appointed to the Los Angeles County Municipal Court bench by Gov. George Deukmejian. The 37-year-old Brown replaces Judge John P. Shook, who was elevated to the Superior Court.
Brown is a founder and former president of the Black Women Lawyers Assn. Before becoming a judicial commissioner, she worked as a legal aid attorney and was a partner in a Los Angeles law firm, where she specialized in criminal and juvenile issues.
Brown received both her bachelor's and her law degrees from Loyola University. As a municipal judge, she will be paid $70,436 a year.
