Wade Phillips, recently fired as interim coach of the New Orleans Saints, was named defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles under new Coach Buddy Ryan.

Ryan, whose "46" defense helped the Bears win the Super Bowl last season, said he will oversee the Eagles' defense and that Phillips will concentrate on the linebackers.

Phillips, 38, replaced his father, Bum, as coach of the Saints for the last four games of last season. He compiled a 1-3 record and was released.
