Hawkins Returning to L.A. for Trial

February 13, 1986

James Hawkins Jr., the convicted killer who escaped from jail in Los Angeles but was recaptured two months later during a gunfight in Northern California, will be returned to Los Angeles to stand trial on two pending murder charges.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Paul Turner on Wednesday ordered Hawkins back in court March 6 after attorney Barry Levin argued that further delays in the case, in which Hawkins is accused of killing two reputed narcotics dealers, could prejudice his right to a fair trial.
