The UC Irvine men's tennis team got off to a good start Thursday at the San Diego Intercollegiate Tournament, but rain prevented most of the day's matches from being played.
Playing in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles flight, UCI's Art Hernandez opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 win over Hawaii's Steve Casey.
The Anteaters split their other two first round matches, both in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles flight. James Myers beat Rich Titus of Cal State Bakersfield, 7-5, 6-0, but Mike Cadigan was defeated by Chapman's Olivier Amerlinck 6-2, 6-4.
Weather permitting, play will resume today with Darrin Yates meeting Hawaii's Mark Kobayashi in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles flight. Also playing in that flight will be Mike Downs, who is scheduled to meet Jim McNamee of the University of San Diego. Mark Kaplan will take on Jari Koho of Utah in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles flight.
Bruce Man Son Hing, the Anteaters' top singles player, was among three players left at home for the weekend to catch up on studies.
