Indonesia Moves to Curb Dog Meat Sales

February 20, 1986|From Reuters

JAKARTA, Indonesia — City officials are clamping down on dog meat butchers and restaurants because rabies has killed 36 people across Indonesia.

Onni Saaroni, director of Jakarta's animal husbandry office, said that officials are trying to stamp out the butchering of dogs and the sale of dog meat.

Trade in dog meat is illegal, but Saaroni said the city had turned a blind eye until a rabies outbreak last year.

About 100 dogs are slaughtered every day in Jakarta.
