February 27, 1986

The City Council this week presented a key to the city to Howie Long, a defensive lineman for the Los Angeles Raiders, and commended him for his achievements as an athlete and humanitarian. Long, who has lived in Redondo Beach since 1983, accepted the award from Mayor Barbara Doerr as his wife and son watched from the audience.

Long was recognized for his contribution to charitable events benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, and for his numerous sports achievements, including playing three times in the Pro Bowl and being named three times as Defensive Lineman of the Year by NFL Alumni.
