VERO BEACH, Fla. — Manager Tom Lasorda made a phone call to Pedro Guerrero Thursday, and it wasn't to wish him a happy Dominican Independence Day.
The Dodger manager wanted to find out when Guerrero planned to arrive here, where the Dodgers completed their second day of workouts without their perennial February no-show.
"Pete said he didn't feel good, that he had the grippe," said Lasorda, who passed along that bulletin without batting an eye.
"He said he should be in Saturday. He can't wait till he gets here."
That's what Lasorda said.
Dodger scout Ralph Avila plans to go to Miami Saturday to meet Guerrero at the airport, and figures they'll be back here by late afternoon. The Dodgers will play their first exhibition a week from Saturday, against Houston at Kissimmee, Fla.
