Beverly Hills : Policeman Presides at Birth

March 06, 1986

Beverly Hills policeman Ron Abeyta presided over a complicated birth at an unusual location--the back seat of a car that he had stopped for speeding at the corner of Robertson Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard.

The baby's head was already emerging when Abeyta arrived, but the umbilical cord was around its neck and the infant was turning blue.

The officer had untangled the cord and cleared the baby's air passages by the time a paramedic unit got to the scene, Police Lt. Bill Hunt said.

The paramedics sped the young family to Cedars-Sinai hospital where Brian Robertson, his wife, Alondra Edmonds, and their 6-pound, 13-ounce baby boy were all found to be in good condition.
