Inmate Who Walked Away From Jail Caught in L.A.

March 12, 1986

An inmate who had walked away from a minimum-security branch jail over the weekend has been recaptured and transferred to the main jail in Santa Ana, Sheriff's Department officials announced Tuesday.

Neal Arthur Smith, 34, was arrested in "a vacant area" in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon, a day after he left the James A. Musick branch facility near El Toro, Sheriff's Department spokesman Dick Olson said.

Smith, who was serving a sentence for violation of probation on a check-passing offense, now faces an additional escape charge, Olson said. "He's back here at the main jail, and he won't come out," he said.

Smith was scheduled for release in June on the probation offense. Olson declined to discuss details of how Smith was recaptured.
