The San Diego City Council on Tuesday approved a sweeping proposal for a $200-million mixed-use complex to be built in a dilapidated three-block area on Broadway near the waterfront.
The Koll Center will include twin, high-rise office towers, a 335-room hotel, commercial and retail outlets, and 30 to 32 residential units.
Developers of the project are the Koll Co. and Shapell Housing Inc.-Goldrich Kest & Associates. The development, which will be built in phases, is to be completed by 1993.
Several council members, particularly Ed Struiksma and William Jones, said they want to see the project's final design, which currently includes three boxy high-rises, refined considerably. Gerald Trimble, executive vice president of the Centre City Development Corp., the downtown redevelopment agency, said his agency will bring back the final design to the City Council in late May.
The project is bounded by Broadway, Kettner Boulevard and E and State streets.
