March 13, 1986

SOUTH PASADENA — Kelvin Wong, 17, a senior at South Pasadena High School, was one of 30 finalists awarded $1,000 in cash at the 45th annual Westinghouse Science Talent Search competition this month in Washington. D. C.

Wong competed against 39 students from high schools around the country for $140,000 in scholarships. Finalists were chosen on the basis of independent research. Wong had tested the chemical reactions of a molecular replica of a tranquilizer used to treat schizophrenics.

A girl from Florida and a boy from New York won $20,000 scholarships by tying for first place in the competition.

The only other Southern California finalist, Andrew Lawrence Feig, a senior at University High School in West Los Angeles, placed ninth and received a four-year $7,500 scholarship.
