Bob Froese recorded his fifth shutout of the NHL season as the Philadelphia Flyers beat Washington 2-0 at the Spectrum Thursday night to snap the Capitals' eight-game winning streak and move back into first place in the Patrick Division.
The victory gave the Flyers a one-point lead over the Capitals, 92-91, in their battle for the top spot in the division. The Capitals have 12 games to play in the regular season and the Flyers 11.
Ilkka Sinisalo scored the only goal the Flyers needed at 4:32 of the first period. Rookie Pelle Eklund fed him the puck and Sinisalo fired a wrist shot from the top of the right face-off circle over the right shoulder of Washington goaltender Pete Peeters.
New York Islanders 3, Hartford 2--Mike Bossy scored his 52nd goal of the season with 27 seconds remaining in the third period to lift the Islanders over the Whalers.
